Dance till you feel Better!

katina · March 9, 2012 · 6 Comments

Wow, we had two AMAZING classes this week!  It didn’t seem like we wanted the party to stop with the encore Beyoncé song from last night!

At the beginning of class on Wednesday, I expressed to the class that it had been one of those weeks for me.  Several of our “regulars” moaned because they knew that when I have a rough week, I tend to create a tough playlist. Although they would probably say that I do it on purpose, I would have to disagree!  It is just one of those things that just “happens”!

Just like my tough playlist seems to just “happen”, my response to things in my life, if I am not careful, just “happens”.  After sharing some chips and queso with a friend last night and talking about our struggles, she said that I appeared angry or bitter.

Hmmmm, I didn’t feel angry OR bitter.  In reality, I was/am fearful.  Something about my personality, my natural bent is to portray anger or frustration when I am fearful.  I know it sounds crazy but it is the truth.  When my children get sick, it burns me up.  I am one EVIL girl with a sick child.  Perhaps it is because it is something that I cannot control?  Perhaps it is because if I really showed how I felt, the people who depend on me to be strong all the time would not know what to do with themselves?

So, I wear masks to hide my true feelings.  I suspect that I am not alone.  With the knowledge that I have the tendency to play “dress-up”, I really had to investigate and ask myself some questions last night to determine how I really felt.

Honestly, after dancing and sweating with you divas last night, I felt better.  The fog had cleared a little so that I could ask myself the hard questions and I sweated so much that it made it easier to take off my mask of anger.

Taking the mask off makes me vulnerable and forces me to accept the reality that I cannot control everything.  Taking off the mask allows me to breathe freely and put my trust where it should be….in God.

Psalm 56:3-4 But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?

James Brown has a song called “Get up Offa that Thing” that I LOVE! I may have to choreograph a dance to it one day! The lyrics are repetitive but so timely for the Dance Fit Divas:

“Get up offa that thing and dance until you feel better

Get up offa that thing and try to release that pressure”

Happy Friday,

You are ALWAYS so right on it!!!!!! I agree 100% with you that most of us wear mask to hide our fears, I know I do. This was needed for me today. Having lunch with my oldest to say good bye as he leaves to go out of the country to London for a week. As much as I hate the idea he is going so far away from me I know that he is now old enough to make decisions without my say so. I would never stop him from this opportunity but it makes me sick when I realize that he will be out of my control & so far away that IF anything would happen to him I could not get to him as fast as I would want to. Going to be a very hard & stressful week for me of worry that I know all I have to do is give it over to God because he is really the one in control. I always find encouragement thru you & your knowledge. Much Love & appreciation for being who you are! Your friend Sharon

Sharon, I will be praying that you won’t worry too much next week! I know it will be hard! Keep reading the word and remind yourself about the faithfulness of GOD. Then do what you do best: hoot, holler and dance! Love to you too!

Hey, I missed out on class this week, but I know what you mean about that mask, and being strong for others. We love you for it, but don’t hurt yourself in the process. It is not an unnatural response for any of us to feel fear about things that are out of our control, but it also won’t help us to stress over them…one of those ongoing life lessons that we have to repeat on occasion.

PLEASE do a routine to James Brown…that would be FABULOUS! (Just don’t expect us to move across the floor like him…LOL!)

Sharon, I totally agree with you and your comments.

Katina you’re the best!! Truly an inspiration and motivation to be who we are and pursue our dreams in spite of all that comes against us!!! My youngest went on a ski trip for Spring Break today and I felt left in the dust. He’s growing up and moving on…soooo independent! My sister says that means I’ve done my job, but it makes me feel like an empty nester all too soon. Oh well, gotta let him grow and go with God and follow the path He has for him while I hide behind my mask to camouflage the tears of both joy and pain.

Regarding the tough work out for the past couple of days: Although we moan and groan, it’s the tough playlists that keep us coming back! ROTFL!!!! I’m truly sore all over, but especially my legs, thighs and butt!!! Look out world, thanks to Katina’s tough playlist and all those swats coupled with my other workouts, my Brazilian booty is shaping up!!! Lovin’, livin’ and continuing to hoot, holler and dance!! You’re the best Katina and we’re all so much better for having known you!!!
