Many of you have told me that you really enjoy reading the FMF posts!  This week is the last FMF for the year! The word for today is WONDER. Happy Friday Divas and here goes:

WONDER is one of those things that tends to get lost as we age. Children are often in a state of astonishment or WONDER over the smallest things.  As old rusty adults, we are hardly in  WONDER about anything.  Things just are.  The few things in entertainment today that do evoke WONDER, tend to do so under a veil of darkness.

I guess that is why I am often in complete WONDER when I get on stage to teach to my fabulous Divas in class.  When I started teaching our class, I committed to an eight week session and I prayed that God would send at least twenty regular attendees to class.  Fast forward two years later and we have at least fifty regular attendees in each class, over 500 women as part of our online meetup community, next Wednesday ninety-five of us will cruise to the Bahamas together, and on Saturday we will conclude our first group bible study!  Talk about WONDER.

Although the numbers are great, it is what happens in the lives of the ladies in class that is most astonishing and keeps me in complete WONDER.  We have had marriages, divorces, children born, cancer, jobs lost, college started, illness and surgeries… But most of all we have drawn closer to God together.

Dear God, thank you so much for bringing us to the close of another year.  May we revive our WONDER for YOU and YOUR will for our lives.

Many of you have told me that you really enjoy reading the FMF posts!  The word for today is QUIET. Happy Friday Divas and here goes:

If you have ever been to one of our classes, you know our class is anything but QUIET.  Women are hootin’ and hollerin’ and our music blares for the majority of class with the exception of the cool down.  

The older I get, the more I realize I need QUIET to think clearly.  The music in class is so loud and things are moving so quickly, an hour has gone by before you know it and whatever was bothering you, didn’t even cross your mind. Perhaps it is just me, but the noisiness of class seems to QUIET the clamoring issues of my day.

Although  loudness can QUIET  life drama for a moment, we often need to get QUIET so that we can see what God is doing and then do what HEwants us to do. We get so wound up from all the craziness of the day, it is hard to QUIET our minds.  A little power salsa, the new crazy merengue and a song full of squats are just what the doctor ordered to help us relax so we can really get QUIET.

Many of you have told me that you really enjoy reading the FMF posts!  The word for today is ROOTS. Happy Friday Divas and here goes:

Most often when we think about our ROOTS, we think of our family or where we are from.  Now when I think about ROOTS, it is time to do something about these wiry gray hairs!  Sometimes we think of relationships in terms of what they are ROOTed in:  love, respect, service, or familiarity. 

There is an old quote that says: “Storms make oaks take ROOTS“.   Wow, how true.   It really is the storms in our lives that push us to take ROOT and learn to yield control of our lives to God.   As with the victims of Hurricane Sandy, sometimes our ROOTS are physically and emotionally torn apart. 

From the prayers put in our prayer box each week, many Divas are going through all kinds of storms (awesome things like pregnancy to very challenging things like cancer and death).  With all that is going on, one would think it would be easier NOT to try to fit class into your schedule. 

However, as WE dance together, we encourage each other.  After class we hug each other and wish each other well and in doing so, we add a little fertilizer to each Diva’s ROOTS

We leave refreshed and with a reminder that our God is not Dead but surely alive living on the inside of us roaring like a Lion! Talk about DEEP ROOTS!

Many of you have told me that you really enjoy reading the FMF posts!  The word for today is LOOK. Happy Friday Divas and here goes:

Each week, I get the grand opportunity to step out onto my physical and spiritual platform of a stage and lead a sea of beautiful women each week in class.  I LOOK out into each of your eyes and just melt.  When the music is on, you sing along and move with out a care in the world.

When new Divas come to class, I hear some of you telling the newbies… “Just LOOK at her (meaning me) and you will be fine”.  What an amazing place God has placed me!

It is fun to LOOK up at the beginning of class and see y’all hugging and laughing.  I think the best part of it all is at the beginning of class when we get a neighbor and LOOK her in the eye and say: “NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY, YOU CANNOT LOOK LIKE ME”.

There are NO comparisons in class, wish we could be like that in real life. 

God has designed each of us to LOOK differently.  We all have something wonderful to give to the world. 

My favorite line from the movie Avatar is “I See You”. 

Sometimes we get so busy LOOKing that we don’t see. 

God sees you and He loves you.

Five Minute Friday-Welcome

WELCOME is how you feel when you arrive.  It is also something that you say automatically when some one says “thank you”.  When used after “thank you” the word WELCOME some how loses its zeal.  Perhaps that is why when you finish your transaction at Chick Fil A, the clerk says “My Pleasure”.

Although the word WELCOME can seem common place when robotically stated after someone says thank you, there is NOTHING common place about arriving somewhere and feeling left out.  Although it has been many years since middle school, the old feeling of everyone already knows everybody and no one talked to me still hurts…as much as we would like to say that it does not.

God designed us to live in community with others.  Could that be why it feels so good when people WELCOME us?  One of the repeated compliments that people give our class is that they felt WELCOMED when they arrived.  WOW.  Divas, I must take my hat off to you because I cannot possibly WELCOME all of our new people.  You guys clap and cheer when someone raises their hand to say that they are new.  You guys share your toning sticks and hip scarves with the new ladies. 

I suspect when you were new, someone WELCOMED you and so you are paying it forward.  How ah-mazing is that?

It is so tempting to go about our day and only talk with our group of friends when we are at church, work, volunteer meetings, or when doing things for the kids at school.  Remember the word WELCOME.  Make it your business or like Chick Fil A, let it be your pleasure to help people feel as though they belong. 

Often a genuine smile, eye contact and a hello go a LONG way!  You may be the only Jesus someone sees.

When we make some one feel WELCOMED, they feel love. 

God is love.

Five Minute Friday-Grasp

Every time God blesses me with the opportunity to stand on the stage and lead my Dance Fit Divas, I am so thankful.  I actually find the concept of women from all different ages, stages, shapes and races coming together to exercise and encourage each other very difficult to GRASP. 

The community of women that God has built through our class is so ah-mazing and a breath of  fresh air.

One of the most fulfilling compliments that people give about our class is that the class members are so nice and that people feel welcomed.  It just makes my heart sing to watch some of the divas who have been attending for a while offer their toning sticks or jingle skirts to a newbie.  Being new and feeling ignored by clicky people can make you GRASP desperately for feelings of insecurity (yes even as adult women).

Maya Angelou wisely said:  I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” 

Some times just getting to class is about all a lady can do.  Getting a smile, encouraging words, and a good ol’ dancing sweat fest while in class is sometimes just enough to help her GRASP the frayed ends of her nerves.

 In Jesus’ final message to His disciples, He said, “You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Each of us has the opportunity to take the gospel to people in our “end of the earth.” “ –Bill Crowder

No matter where you are, you can smile, say hello, genuinely listen, pray, and meet the need of someone else.

Five Minute Friday-WIDE

I don’t know about y’all, but on Monday morning it seems like the distance to Friday is not only long but WIDE and treacherous.  When I finally make it to Wednesday, (HUMP-DAY), I can see the weekend flickering in the distance and what seemed so WIDE and long appears to be much closer than half-way there.  I am sure dancing and sweating off the cares of the week with all of you fabulous Divas really helps to change my perception. 

Perception is a funny thing isn’t it?  There is always a WIDE array of opinions on a particular subject.   Even twins don’t always see an identical circumstance in the same way.  Another crazy thing about perception is that it can change–sometimes quickly at other times it may take a lifetime.   It has always been said that it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. 

When we were cooling down on Wednesday, I was drenched in sweat and already feeling better from just the crazy energy you gals gave me in class.  Then, I listened and worshiped to our new cool down song, Redeemed by Big Daddy Weave.  God changed my mind. 

Just after the first verse, I thought I might burst into tears:

Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last

Wow, that has been me for the last couple of weeks.  Little things have kept coming up and all I could see was a WIDE valley of stuff I screwed up and worry about the future.

Then next part of the verse and chorus almost literally knocked me off my feet:

Then You look at this prisoner and say to me “son
Stop fighting a fight it’s already been won”

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed, I’m redeemed

I am NOT who I used to be.  I AM REDEEMED and the battle IS NOT MINE!!!  Thank you God for changing my perception right there on that stage standing in front of a WIDE variety of women from all different cultures, backgrounds and walks of life. 

Dear God,

May our eyes, hearts and ears remain WIDE OPEN so that we can see, feel and hear what YOU are doing.

Psalm 18:35-36

You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great.  You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.

Stretch-Five Minute Fridays

I am writing to you this morning from just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. God has blessed me with the awesome opportunity to teach in a Devoted Fitness Master Class in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday! I am super excited and just in awe of how all the dancing, praising, and loving on women has stretched me.

I started teaching ZUMBA at the Kernersville Parks and Recreation Center only committed to an eight week session. God has stretched that eight week session into two years and added Devoted Fitness. WOW!

Last night, the fabulous Yzetta Bynum taught class in my absence. From the pictures and texts I received, you girls had a blast. I knew class would be great….I was just worried in general about not being there. I am a control freak!

God used my absence from class to stretch my faith and simply remind me that HE is in control.

I am so glad that God is in control!  How has God stretched you this week?
